THE 3RI PRINCIPLES
CROSS-SECTORAL COLLABORATION
The transformation of how we recover and recycle plastic is a collective effort that must include the private sector, governments and civil society. We can only solve the global plastic waste problem by working together.
TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
All corporate members of the 3RI’s steering committee have publicly committed, through the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, to reduce their plastic waste footprints and rethink product design to reduce the amount of plastic needed and ensure that products are as circular as possible. The Guidelines for Corporates set out a vision that corporates will assess their plastic footprint and waste, and identify neccessary actions within their value chain.
INNOVATION
The Plastic Credits system is a market-based solution which offers an innovative financial instrument that incentivises the collection and recycling of plastic waste (including beverage cartons) in a transparent and socially inclusive way.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT
The circular economy has both environmental and social aspects. The Plastic Standard will ensure that environmental and social safeguards are fully integrated into the projects while advancing a range of Sustainable Development Goals.
The 3R Initiative aims to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9, 11, 12 and 17, among others.
