3RI PILOT PROJECTS
Insights, data and information collected from the pilots will help in the development of a reliable and transparent Plastic Standard
OFFICIAL 3RI PILOT PROJECTS
The official 3RI Pilot Projects have been selected by the Corporate Members to test and implement the 3RI solutions. Other pilots will be selected through an open call for external projects.
PROJECT STOP, Muncar, Indonesia
Muncar is coastal fishing community in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. With minimal waste services in place, the majority of citizens are forced to dump their waste directly into the environment. Muncar was chosen as the first PROJECT STOP location due to the seriousness of the challenge, coupled with strong leadership and environmental commitment at national, regency and local levels.
According to a recent community survey, households here generate roughly 40 tons of waste per day, while 90% of the community is without waste services. Through Project STOP, an increasing number of Muncar households and business are receiving waste collection and recycling processing, some for the first time.
More than 30,000 people served with waste management collection (most for the first time)
60 full time jobs created
1,800 tons of waste (of which 300 tons of plastic) collected
Our Goal: Zero leakage of waste into the environment, grow local employment and provide replicable solutions and innovations for other cities.
PROJECT RECICLAR EN CAJA
The project aims to increase the collection of UBC in Medellin and surrounding areas. Apart from its tangible environmental impact the project also seeks to raise awareness about recyclability locally and support the waste pickers in improving their livelihoods. The project works with two waste pickers’ associations: Corpoccidente and COCJAN
To develop local sustainable recycling value chain.
To design and develop local collection value chain.
To provide the participating waste picker associations with new equipment.
To raise awareness about recycling among consumers and boost the effectiveness of waste collection (via mobile app connecting local consumers with waste pickers to facilitate collection of waste).
On behalf of the 3R Initiative, BVRio conducted an open call for projects to test the Plastic Recovery and Recycling Project Accounting Standard (Plastic Standard). All eligible plastic recovery and recycling projects were encouraged to apply. Insights, data and information collected from the pilots will help in the development of a reliable, inclusive and transparent standard. All selected pilot projects will in turn benefit from ongoing technical advice from the 3RI over a period of 8 months. The assistance includes technical advice on project development leading to potential participation of the project in the 3R Plastic Standard Verification & Crediting Mechanism (launching in 2021). The pilot projects will also receive substantial marketing exposure that may help attract potential sponsors and investors (through Circular Action Hub).
